چکیده

Sixty patients of endogenous depression and thirty normal controls were studied to find out the relationship of post dexamethasone plasma Cortisol levels (PDPC) and clinical improvement of endogenous depression inpatients treated with electroconvulsive therapy and imipramine. The PDPC levels in both the group of patients showed significant decrease with clinical improvement (Pre and post treatment PDPC values of ECT group was 20.7 ug/dl and 13.6 ug/dl while it was 17.9 ug/dl and 12.7 ug/dl respectively for the Imipramine group). A significant correlation was also found between PDPC and severity of illness (p< 0.001) in the both groups which indicates that PDPC levels is independent of treatment modality used.

POST DEXAMETHASONE PLASMA cortisol LEVELS AS INDICATOR OF TRICYCLIC RESPONSE IN MAJOR DEPRESSION

Present study suggest that changes in response to the post dexamethasone plasma cortisol levels in the patients of major depression receiveing anti depressants (Imipramine and Amitryptyline) might represent a laboratory marker of clinical progress. We estimated post dexamethasone plasma cortisol levels weekly in thirty hospitalized patients during pro-treatment, post-treatment and drug free pos...

Dexamethasone suppression test and selection of antidepressant medications.

Endogenous depressives with abnormal dexamethasone suppression tests (DSTs) respond better to somatic antidepressant treatments than those with normal DSTs. Whether the DST also aids in the selection of specific antidepressants has not been determined. A pilot report suggested that patients with abnormal DSTs might be noradrenaline-deficient and respond preferentially to imipramine or desiprami...

Adrenocortical Dysfunction in Depression: Response to Dexamethasone Suppression Test - a Comparative Study1

Thirty patients of Major Depressive Disorder, Schizophrenia and normal healthy controls each, received an overnight dexamethasone suppression test. Plasma and urinary Cortisol measurements showed that depressed patients had increased adrenocortical activity before dexamethasone and they showed an abnormal early escape from suppression which had a relationship with severity of depression. An att...

Covariation of depressive symptoms, parkinsonism, and post-dexamethasone plasma cortisol levels in a bipolar patient: simultaneous response to ECT and lithium carbonate.

A patient presented with concurrent mood congruent delusions, parkinsonism, and elevated post-dexamethasone plasma cortisol levels. This triad could result from simultaneous development of cholinergic-monoaminergic dysfunction within critical limbic and extrapyramidal loci. The magnitude of each abnormality decreased in concert during a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Remaining abnor...

Disturbed glucocorticoid receptor autoregulation and corticotropin response to dexamethasone in depressives pretreated with metyrapone.

We studied glucocorticoid receptor autoregulation and corticotropin response to dexamethasone in depressed patients and controls, attempting to control for the confounding effect of endogenous glucocorticoids. After depletion of endogenous cortisol, depressed patients showed an attenuated suppressibility of corticotropin by dexamethasone in the face of unchanged dexamethasone plasma levels. Bet...
